President’s Message Although, as I’m writing this message it isn’t officially Spring, I feel like time is moving very quickly and there are many spring and summer things that I have to start planning and doing. Besides my personal activities, many of our club’s events require a lot of advanced planning and I’ve been working with some of our club members on these.
For example, Ginny Platania, Valerie Lieberman and I have spent a lot of time in the last two weeks on issues related to our June Moon race. June 20th may seem like a long time away, but there is a lot to do and we could use your help in many different ways. This will be the first year that the beneficiary of the race will be the ALS (commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) Association, Greater New York Chapter. We’d like to raise as much money as possible to contribute to ALS,. A couple of ways you can help are by becoming part of a fund raising committee or by contacting organizations or companies to request sponsorship or donations. Also, we could use assistance in getting volunteers for the race. It would be greatly appreciated if you could either personally volunteer or if you could help us contact some local groups (e.g., schools, church organizations) that may be able to send volunteers. If you can help in any way contact Ginny, the race’s director, at jgplatania@verizon.net.
Another important event that is rapidly approaching is the start of our Step-by-Step instructional running program on April 22nd. Over the years, this program has helped many new and experienced runners improve their running and their lives. A lot of work has already gone into setting up this spring’s program. Many of our past volunteer coaches have commented that it was a personally rewarding and satisfying experience helping runners. If you're interested in being a volunteer coach, contact Valerie Lieberman at cjrrcnewsletter@comcast.net or call (908) 591-3963.
While I feel like the above dates are rapidly approaching, I can imagine how Baxter Brooks feels about the Boston Marathon on April 21st. In addition to the rigorous training required to run the marathon, Baxter, our friend, former club President, Step-by-Step coach and long time USATF representative, is part of Team Reeve. He’s running to raise money for the Christopher and Dana Reeve's Foundation which has the goal of curing spinal cord injuries. Baxter has given a lot to our club over the years. If you are able, please go to our club’s website and support Baxter's effort with a donation.
I’ve just shared some of the more important club issues that are on my mind. Let me know things that are of interest to you by e-mailing me at tombrand@earthlink.net or better yet by coming to our next club meeting in Cranford on March 27th.
