2010 Class Descriptions: Class size is limited. We will contact you if you’re shut out of a class. Step 1 Step 1 is geared to the absolute beginner OR to the established runner returning to the sport after a break from injury or just time. Step 1 prepares the runner for running 20 minutes without a break. PLEASE DON’T PURCHASE RUNNING SHOES BEFORE THE CLASS. Why? Wearing the wrong running shoes can quickly lead to trouble. Running shoes and running feet come in many different types and it pays to be informed about these issues before you pick out your running shoes. Just wear comfortable exercise clothes and sneakers for the first few classes. We have our local specialty running shoe store come to one of our early classes and explain the different types of running shoes; show you examples of the actual shoes; and help prepare you for picking out the correct running shoe for your running feet. Minimum requirement Step 1: to be walking VERY BRISKLY 20 minutes, 4-5 times/week.
Step 1 1/2 Step 1 1/2 increases the runner’s endurance in a group run setting and prepares him/her for the 5k. This class is for ALL levels of speed. You do NOT need to be fast to be in Step 1 1/2. Some students will begin the class already running fast. For others, the first class begins their journey. Minimum requirement Step 1 1/2: to be running 20 minutes, 4-5 times/week.
Step 3 (Availability of this class TBA in 2010) Step 3 The 10k (CRANFORD LOCATION ONLY) gradually increases your mileage, then enters you into the Speed/Sharpening phase of the Training plan. The Sharpening phase has speed workouts specific to the 10k. This class is for ALL levels of speed. You do NOT need to be fast to be in Step 3. Some students will begin the class already running fast. For others, the first class begins their journey. Minimum requirement Step 3: You MUST be 18 years of age by April 21, 2009 and running at least 17 miles/week. Step 3 class size is very restricted.
FOR STEP 3: If you need help reaching 17 miles/week, you are welcome to follow the Training Plan “PREPARATION for Step 3 (Link here). It is written to begin near the end of the Step 1 1/2 or Beyond Step 1 Training Program. It gradually increases one’s endurance using the hard/easy system of running. All runs are expressed in minutes of running. If you need to use this training plan in its entirety, you should begin no later than mid-February. If your mileage is higher than Week 1 of the PREPARATION for Step 3 Training Plan, just join the Training plan at whatever mileage you are at now. If you run the same distance a few times/week, please allow extra time to adjust your mileage to what is expressed in the PREPARATION for Step 3 Training Plan.
